Birthday Wishes for a New 9 Year Old

Yesterday, our Grace turned 9. It's so hard to believe that 9 years ago we were hoping that the terrible infection she had contracted from swallowing amniotic fluid would not take her life. She was on the heavy hitter antibiotics and had an IV tube placed in her scalp. Her breathing was shallow and her fever was high. But, never once did we think that the little baby girl wouldn't make trouble for that bacteria and fight it back. What we thought was going to be a long stay in the NICU turned out to be only 10 days.

Grace was a fighter the whole way through the pregnancy. Every chance she got, she took charge of the situation. For instance, I have never had morning sickness like I had with Grace. She was determined to be the most stable pregnancy I had ever known. Then, she decided that she would like to make an early arrival. We convinced her with some drugs that she should really stay put. That wasn't enough, though. She didn't like my gallbladder -- it gave me fits the entire 9 months; it was removed shortly after she was released from the NICU.

Grace has always gone after what she wanted. We have joked since she was a baby that we need to teach her to use her powers for good. Well, she is one smart cookie and a very loving little girl. She doesn't enjoy injustice and will let you know it -- and expect you to correct it. At the same time, she will give you the shirt off her back if you should need one. She is going to be a holy force to reckon with when she grows up.

For now, we will revel in the moments that only Grace can provide: beauty salons in her bedroom, dance shows in the basement, writing books and asking to have them published, and never letting her sisters get the better of her. We love her dearly and pray that she will continue to follow God into the future with this same gusto!

Happy Birthday, Grace!

Thanks for the comments! Grace had a fine birthday and went to spend the money her grandmother gave her this morning. A Unicorn Pillow pet is now part of our lives. LOL
