Affirming Life Symposium -- Announcement

On Tuesday, October 5, Catholics here and across the country will be focusing on the issue of helping support pregnant women who receive a prenatal diagnosis of a disability. As Catholics we believe that every person is willed and loved by God, and has inherent gifts and dignity. However, with new technologies in prenatal testing, this dignity is being called into question. Upon receiving an unexpected prenatal diagnosis, and in the absence of comprehensive information and resources that promote the option of carrying to term, about 90 % of women decide to terminate their pregnancies. The Church upholds that all human beings have infinite value regardless of any medical conditions or disabilities, and seeks to support families during this time.

From 1-2:30 p.m., the National Catholic Partnership on Disability (NCPD) will host a national training for priests, seminarians, medical personnel and pastoral staff, available free to any parish or parishioner as part of the Archdiocese's Affiliate Membership to NCPD; register at www.ncpd.org The Archdiocese is helping parishes set up online access to this training. For more information, contact Peg Kolm, Department of Special Needs Ministries at mkolm@adw.org or at 301-853-4560.

Following the NCPD national training, starting at 2:45 p.m., the Archdiocese will hold its own Affirming Life Symposium at CUA, focusing on local efforts and reviewing a Pastoral Care Plan. The Archdiocese’s Affirming Life Initiative is partnering with a local ministry, Isaiah’s Promise, to provide information, resources, training and multicultural outreach. The Symposium will also address the needs of the 90% of families who did not know of these resources and who may now need support.
